Rich joined other celebrities at the Wendy’s Celebrity Cook Off to benefit the Dave Thomas adoption foundation. Joined by NFL players and television stars such as Kimberly Young, Rich cooked at the Japanese steakhouse Benihana. Rich sold his apron and autographed memorabilia and was humbled and shocked that his apron sold for more than anyone else’s that evening. The event raised over $100,000 for the charity.
Rich raises money for Charity
Monday, June 30th, 2008Humble and Realistic
Thursday, June 26th, 2008| Very well written. Amazing aspect of Rich and the reason I believe many people like myself consider him the best fighter ever is a result of him not cowering away from the fact he is human…which is more than we can say about other fighters. Humble and realistic, blended with the guidance and faith of God - the ultimate champion. Sent by Krishan Jogia |
Rock Solid
Thursday, June 26th, 2008| I enjoy everyone of these “Franklin Equations.” You are both an exciting fighter and inspiring person. I appreciate both of these facts - but the simple sharing of your faith impresses me all the more. I always look forward to watching you fight….It is your never say die attitude, rock-solid composure, professional manner, and appropriate humility that has and will always keep you a fan favorite. You are a Champion of Champions. As we all enter the octagon of our world, may we carry forth the same qualities that you carry into the cage. Sent by Kelly Rhoades |
Keep Him first!
Thursday, June 26th, 2008| I appreciate your openness, insight, and encouragement. Most of all, I appreciate the example you set for Christ. God has given you a platform and you’ve been a positive example to your fans. Keep Him first and keep up the good work! Sent by Pastor David |
YOU JUST NEVER KNOW
Thursday, June 26th, 2008
| I grew up in chaos. I attended 13 school districts by the time I graduated from high school. Studying math, and later teaching it in high school, helped provide stability lacking in my personal life. Math represents a reliable, predictable world.
I train under the fiction that all life outcomes are foreseeable and fair. For weeks prior to a fight, I believe if I keep working my plan, victory must be mine. Years ago, at the Indianapolis 500, fire and life squad units were rushing to a smash-up. A rescuer, running across the track, was hit by an emergency vehicle. He was killed. The truck was traveling in the opposite direction of the slowing race cars. Sports Illustrated put it this way: “He failed to look both ways, on the ultimate one way street.” I’ve chosen a high-risk business. Fans respond to the “you just never know what’s going to happen” reality of the octagon. But for the fighters, given the randomness of life, their anxieties must be carefully managed. This randomness can be tempered with the notion that if we are mindful, and work hard, the odds will greatly favor us. My relationship with God is at the center of my life. It is enhanced by the sense of order math has always provided me. And so I try to stay grounded, as I approach the uncertainty that awaits me, inside the octagon.

Fight Day Weight
Tuesday, June 24th, 2008| Fans who know I fight at 185 lb remark that I look much bigger in the octagon. This is the way it works:
At the weigh-in, the day before, I step off the scale at 185-186. (If it’s not a title fight, the UFC permits a 1 pound allowance, and believe me, I use it). Since I cut down my food and water intake for days before the weigh-in, my stomach shrinks. Although my mind says EAT, I know I’ll get sick if I pour it on. So after formal announcement of my weight, I’ll eat 3 PB&J, each at 15 minute intervals. |
Upcoming Plans
Friday, June 20th, 2008| I have been in Las Vegas this week, training Dustin Hazelett and Matt Brown for their UFC fights. I’ll be cornering them tomorrow while they’re in the octagon.
I’ll leave Sunday for Seattle; Matt Hume will be working with me throughout next week. Although my next UFC fight isn’t scheduled yet, I need to constantly be incorporating the newest fighting techniques into my repertoire. The younger, up-and-coming fighters have fresh approaches - not being familiar with them can set the stage for defeat. Complacency in the octagon is dangerous. Awareness, tinged with paranoia, rules. |
Avoiding Grudge Matches
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008| A number of you have asked whom I would like to fight next. Actually I try to not dwell on this - I just fight whomever the UFC wants to lock me into the octagon with. I know this is contrary to the usual practice of manufacturing a grudge match with a probable next opponent, but it’s never been my style.
I was trained with the notion of fighting-as-sport, and seeing the other guy as an opponent, not an enemy. The other approach is, frankly, more entertaining, but I like to keep my focus narrow. |
